The Mad Hatters Festive Afternoon Tea at The Sanderson
“If you are looking for a fun and indulgent Afternoon Tea in London, check out the Madhatter’s Tea at the Sanderson Hotel.
For Christmas, they have a festive version with hot Turkey sandwiches and Christmassy pastries. We went along one afternoon in preparation to step through the looking glass.
The Alice in Wonderland inspired Madhatter’s Afternoon Tea, is served daily in the covered terrace, sort of your outdoors, indoors. It is quite protected from the elements but they can supply blankets and heat lamps in case you are too cold.
If you are a fan of Alice, you will love this whimsical tea. Every little detail has been thought through quite thoroughly. They have a new pastry chef so some of the elements of the tea might be slightly different to that shown here.
This indulgent afternoon tea includes a tall tower of cakes and patisseries. Each individual piece is beautifully done and tastes unique. This plate has the light vanilla macaron, the delicious chocolate cake and a light and buttery shortbread. You might have noticed the gorgeous Alice themed crockery used to serve the tea and cakes on. They are made by Luna and Curious which is available to buy too.
The menu in an old book and a selection of teas in medicine bottles.
On here, the lemon financiers were my particular favourite, with a zingy citrussy flavour. The drink me bottles were supposed to be pannacotta which didn’t work very well when trying to suck it up through a straw.
As for the teas, the selection in the cute little bottles were all very flowery and fruity. I was in the mood for a full-bodied Assam and had to choose from the other basic tea menu. The staff were very good at accommodating the different tea choices and were happy to change the teas too.
The savouries on the Christmas Afternoon Tea menu include a festive Turkey sandwich and some pigs in blanket.
No Afternoon Tea is complete without scones. They serve the scones warm when you are ready for them. They make good scones here, light and fluffy, served with clotted cream and jam, of course.
I would recommend that you don’t have lunch and make no dinner plans on the day that you go for the Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea. They will spoil you and indulge you and feed you until you feel like you really need that Drink Me potion to get yourself home after.
It’s really fun and totally delicious. Definitely one of the favourites of the posh Afternoon Teas in London. If you are looking for a treat, this is a good choice.
