Hoppy craft beer heaven at Redchurch Brewery

Redchurch Craft Beer

Craft beer, if you haven’t heard, is all the rage right now, and as a card-carrying hipster I have more than happily hopped onto this particular bandwagon. Needless to say I was delighted when Bethnal Green’s Redchurch Brewery invited me to try their latest brew, the New Zealand Pilsner (NZ Pils, for the cool kids).

Billed as the follow-up to their Brick Lane Lager, which won silver in the Imbibe Lager Challenge 2018, the NZ Pils is a blend of noble hops resonating with pine, citrus and spice notes. Redchurch describe the beer as “bright, bitter and beautifully balanced” –  I would say it’s the freshest thing since mineral water was bottled.

Seriously, this beer is GOOD and at 5.1% ABV it’s not going to have you on the floor in a hurry. If you are after something a bit stronger, Redchurch serves two gorgeous stouts – the Hoxton and the Old Ford Export – which are smoky and chocolatey and pure malt deliciousness. For the health-conscious drinker (is there such a creature?) the range of Urban Farmhouse sours, which contain a strain of bacteria known as Lactobacillus, will tick all the right boxes.

Aside from the top-notch beers, Redchurch is simply a nice space to be in. Housed in a railway arch with a corrugated ceiling and concrete floors, the taproom’s “vibe” is cool but not at all snobby. The communal bench / table set-up encourages socialising and the miniature pot plants dotted around the place give it a fresh, trendy feel. Giant speakers and a set of decks take pride of place near the main bar – Redchurch regularly hosts live music events and supposedly a member of staff is quite an accomplished DJ.

Despite its achingly hip demeanour, Redchurch won’t put you out of pocket. Prices range from £2.30 for a half-pint of Brick Lane Lager to £4.90 for two-thirds of a pint of the Double Dry Hop Sour. I’ll drink to that!
