Hotel Review: CitizenM Tower Hill
Super comfortable beds, power showers, ipad control centre, free movies
I’ve just been made a citizen. This is what your status when you book a stay at a CitizenM Hotel. As one of the new wave of modern hotels, turning old fashioned hospitality on its head. Gone are the concierge desk, check in counter, restaurants, room serve and other amenities. In its place, you get a super comfortable oversized bed, power shower, premium toiletries and other modern touches.
The newest CitizenM hotel in London opened in Tower Hill. The lobby area is designed to feel like your own cosy living room with squishy sofas and LCD TVs. Their designer had a field day sourcing quirky British art to fill the living space. There is art at every turn. If you need to work, there are lots of desks and even free to use iMac terminals.
Check-in takes a minute at one of the terminals, with your online booking confirmation. You get a room key which doubles as a luggage tag and if you visit another hotel, you can reuse it too.
The Rooms at CitizenHotel
There are 370 rooms at this hotel and every single one is identical. They all come with an extra large king size bed, very comfortable mattresses with a mattress top. Frette Egyptian cotton sheets and feather pillows all tick the right boxes for a luxury stay.
The wall to wall windows dominate the room and with a view like this of the Tower, the location is just perfect.
The room sizes might not be massive but the amenities are more than adequate. There is both a workdesk with multiple international sockets and USB outlets and a separate side table with the prerequisite designer chair. You won’t need your travel adapter here.
Storage wise, there is adequate hanging space with an inbuilt safe at the bottom of the wardrobe. Under the bed is a deep and wide drawer to put away any bulky clothes or baggage.

The view from one of the roomThe view from our Tower view room was absolutely stunning. As we got to the room after dark, we didn’t really get the full impact of the view.Watch the stunning view of the Tower of London unfold as the remote control blinds are raised. Had a lof of fun with this gadget.
Everything in the room is controlled via the tablet, the blinds, the mood lights, the LCD TV, alarm and music. This has menus for the temperature control, the blinds, room service and the mood lighting. You can choose from a range of light settings to suit your mood, hence the purple hue on some of the room photos.
As they have cut away all the unnecessary frills, there is no room service but they do have a 24 hours food and drink bar on the ground floor. Unfortunately, if you need laundry, you will need to find somewhere nearby to do it.
The Bar on the top floor
The bar on the top floor is just stunning. It has double height glass windows that overlook the Tower of London. In the day time, it is a quiet place to read a book or do some work, with no one to bother you. In the evening, the place transforms into the most trendy place to meet friends. While the weather is still warm, the large wrap around terrace is a fab place to have a drink and enjoy the stunning views.
Breakfast and Coffee at the new CoffeeM
The cooked breakfast was very good. You serve yourself from the hot food counter while someone makes you a coffee. If you want to go donw the European route, there are platters of cold meats and cheese, pastries, fruit salad, muesli, cereal and juices.
If you didn’t get enough coffee for breakfast, stop by the Coffee M counter just by the front door. This is their new concept, soon to be rolled out across other hotels. This barista, Chao, is possibly the most friendly, knowledgable and enthusiastic barista in London. We had a very geeky chat about cold brew coffee while I waited for my latter.
Right now, they have converted one of their rooms into a Sleep Museum with Sam Bompass. Knowing Sam, this will be quite an intriguing installation. It’s free to visit.
The CitizenM is such a fun hotel with fab design touches everywhere. Our stay was very comfortable and if you are a 21st Century traveller with needs of high-speed wifi, a super comfortable bed, strong power shower, good workspaces with multiple sockets or even if you are just a tourist in town, this hotel will deliver what you need. Affordable luxury indeed.
