The Terrace Jumeirah Lowndes Belgravia
Even after living in London for so many years, I still delight in discovering new hidden parts. Dining at The Terrace at the Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel led me to discover this hidden courtyard in the Halkin Arcade in Knightsbridge.
Accessed through a couple of side alleys, you emerge into a quiet flower strewn courtyard. The raised terrace houses Lowndes Hotel’s summer terrace. Al fresco tables are casually arranged around olive plants and pots of aromatic herbs. It’s made to feel like you are somewhere in the med and expect to hear the quiet lapping of waves over the edges of the terrace.
Along one side of the terrace is an open air grill, which dictates much of the menu. There are dishes that will suit most palates on here. Starters range from European to Middle Eastern.
We started off with a Charcuterie platter, a very generous one and a delicious salt and pepper squid with nam jin dipping sauce.
It would only be right to pick something from the grill for main course. Within minutes, our freshly grilled Rose County Rump Steak with grilled portobello mushroom and plum tomatoes arrived. The choice cut of beef from Lancashire was juicy with a nice charred flavour.
We couldn’t resist ordering the Dingley Dell pork short ribs with sticky maple glaze. The meat was falling off the bone and deliciously flavoured.
All around us, sounds of muted conversation and the sizzle of the grill. A few low sofas had been occupied by a local family, who seemed to be regulars. The setting is so casual that families feel comfortable to bring their small children. Other guests were enjoying cocktails after a shopping spree in nearby Harvey Nichols.
Service here at The Terrace is friendly and unrushed. Customers are treated like old friends and the ladies who were serving us were stopping to chat to guests on the other tables.
As the late summer sun set, we neared the end of our meal. For a final flourish, we had a couple of very pretty desserts. The dessert menu is short and very sweet. We had to have this lemon meringue pie sundae, which is massive if you decide to order it.
The unexpected setting, relaxed ambience and food at The Terrace at the Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel made this an altogether really enjoyable evening.
