Chamberlains Fish and Chips Leadenhall Market
A new Fish and Chips Kiosk has opened in the historic Leadenhall Market. You don’t often get a Fish and Chips restaurant with this kind of expertise behind it. The fish is sourced from Chamberlain and Thelwell, a 4th generation fishmonger. Every piece of fish served is sourced direct from the boat.
The kitchen team is headed by Chef Andrew who also oversees the Chamberlain Restaurant in Leadenhall Market. With over 16 years experience, they have honed their art in hospitality. Besides the freshly fried fish, they have proper fat chips and mushy peas. There is a special on the menu every day.
Instead of doing a takeaway or sitting outside the shop, we got a table inside the restaurant for the purposes of this review. (You can get fish and chips in the restaurant too but the prices are quite different.) On the menu, the most popular choices are the haddock and cod, both sourced from Peterhead in Scotland. There are seasonal choices too like Cornish Hake.
We ordered the beer battered cod and the panko breaded plaice. The first piece of fish was just superb. Perfectly fried, crispy beer batter and fresh firm fish. You really couldn’t fault it. The breaded plaice was done very well too and you can taste that they did not use stale oil, a big plus. It was absolutely enormous, filled the whole plate. (See pic). The side dishes of mushy peas and fat chips were equally well executed.
They also make their own pickles. Pickled onions, pickled eggs and pickled gherkins. We loved the gherkins but really did not get the Pickled eggs? Whoever invented that?
The homemade ketchup and tartar sauces were both great accompaniments to the fish and chips. Almost forgot, if you are that way inclined, you can get a portion of curry sauce too. That’s another quirk I don’t understand.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable introduction to Chamberlains. I am a big fan of fish and chips and this is one of the best I’ve had in London.
